Argh. I love this comic but I have to say this, I’ve held it in for too long.
The transformation of drow into a drider is not the “highest reward”. It is Lolth’s ultimate punishment, reserved for those who blaspheme or otherwise greatly offend the dark goddess.
Of course this then leads me to wishing for another superhero/villain to know this and point it out, followed up by laughing their head off as E.S. rages.
Oh well, that’s what daydreams are for right?
It is the highest reward since the end of 3rd edition and the beginning of fourth. It does not make sense for the demon queen of spiders to punish her servants by turning them into something that is more like her, thus the change in attitude from the drow. In 3.5 it was only a faction of drow that held this belief, but it is now the prevalent belief in drow society at large.
@Krishnath: Dude. NOBODY plays the 4th edition. And since the rulebook from the 70′s is obviously not that particular version, you’re obviously missing something.
@dreadpiratewestley: still, Krishnath does make a good point. Suddenly being given a massive boost to strength, several spell like abilities, and spider themed powers doesn’t really seem like much of a punishment if it is bestowed by the goddess of spiders. It seems more like a reward. I played 3.5, and that always kind of bugged me. Lolth seemed more like the type of goddess to just flat out kill those who had displeased her, the drider thing really confused me.
At least that’s not as bad as being turned into a CYCLOPS. As my skull reformed, one of my eyes got turned into JELLY. Thank well…ummm…me for time traveling pocket watches.
You guys are lucky, I was once turned into a seer… I saw so many terrible, terrible things… lets just say if you plan to move to New Jersey any time soon… don’t
Huh. Didn’t know that. I rarely venture outside of 3.5. Besides, driders are deformed and pretty darn hideous in most depictions. And Lolth is a chaotic evil deity that is portrayed as keeping the dark elves at war with each other for teh lulz, so does it need to make sense? Eh, w/ever. ES is pretty badass as a drider so what do I have to object to anyway?
Your original arguement can still hold as well tho. ES is just a snotty 16 year old rich girl, after all. How can we say that she got all the details of the ritual correct? And Lolth, being a chaotic evil diety, may take advantage of that, for shits and giggles. With everything I’ve seen about her, i doubt a DROP of blood would suffice for her.
OK, all those of you who insist on using the “three times as much deodorant” joke need to remember to start using “three times as much eyeliner” jokes whenever this particular villainess shows up.
Bottom right panel, santa is bringing a world of pain this christmas.

You realize the magic sourcebook isn’t in our universe, right? ES’s version of Lolthian theology is what’s in THAT book.
oh, be glad it’s your enemy growing eyes, I had a mission once where I had to grow extra eyes, it hurts to have your skull reformed………

Santa’s not here to stop this particular spider invasion. Where is that jolly old aracniphobe when you need him?
Lolth wasn’t around in first edition. There wouldn’t be the right magic for what E.S. is trying to do.
too bad E.S. lost that fantastic ass in the transformation
indeed =(
Hopefully she can control the transformation at will.
If not, that ass will surely be missed!

Horrible mutations? sexy costume with a graceful-but-creepy animal motif? Are you sure your patron isn’t Slaanesh?
Never commented here before… and as per the usual cliché let me say that I love the comic. I really mean it. Spinerrette is one of the few comics I have read that make me laugh out loud. Naked Time Travelling Benjamin Franklin rules! Okay, now that’s over, on the topic of Dungeons and Dragons, which version/edition would you regular commentors recommend? All of a sudden I feel like trying it – it seems interesting. Not right now though, it’s nearly nine o’clock down here in Australia.
Oops. I meant nine o’clock at night.
